Virtual Art Party will celebrate artist Jeffrey Gibson, whose work ALIVE!, 2017, in the form of a painted wind turbine blade, currently graces the museum’s Elrod Sculpture Garden. Gibson has been commissioned by Palm Springs Art Museum to create a new work that will be debuted to Art Party viewers on this special evening! This Virtual Art Party will include the world premiere of his new performance art piece, as well as a behind-thescenes studio tour showcasing highlights of his creative process. The museum aspires to acquire Gibson’s newly commissioned artwork for the collection, enabling it to become part of the legacy of Palm Springs Art Museum. The evening will be capped off with a celebrity MC and performances by guest entertainers.
Jeffrey Gibson is a multidisciplinary artist of Cherokee heritage and a citizen of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Known for his paintings, sculptures, videos, and performances, Gibson combines references to Native American traditions with the visual languages of Modernism to explore the confluence of queer identity, popular culture, race, and social narratives. Based in Hudson, New York, Gibson is a recipient of a 2019 MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant. A selection from his ongoing examination of transformational garments was included in the 2019 Whitney Biennial, and his recent exhibition Jeffrey Gibson: When Fire is Applied to a Stone it Cracks was seen at the Brooklyn Art Museum, New York. He has had solo exhibitions at the Seattle Art Museum, the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, and Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, among many other venues. His work is included in major public collections, including Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, Indiana; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; National Gallery of Canada, Ontario, Canada; and Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
